Aluminum Sulfate (Alum)

Aluminum Sulfate, also known as "alum," has a variety of uses. It is used as a flocculant, coagulant, and emulsion breaker in water treatment. It also helps remove turbidity, suspended solids, reduces biochemical oxygen demand, and clarifies potable, process and wastewater in water treatment proceeses.

One other popular use of Aluminum Sulfate is in gardening. Aluminum Sulfate is very acidic so it can be added to very alkaline soils to balance the pH for plants. The most common use in gardening is adding Aluminum Sulfate to the soil to change the flower color (blue or pink) of Hydrangeas.

In the textile industry, Aluminum Sulfate can be used as a "mordant" for dying textiles or fabrics to help fix or bind the dye to the fibers more effectively.
