Where to Buy Quality Calcium Chloride Food Grade and Tech Grade and Some of Its Uses

Jan 17th 2022

Calcium chloride, CaCl2, is a salt comprised of calcium and sodium. It is a white crystalline solid at room temperature, and highly soluble in water. There are multiple forms and uses for calcium chloride. From food preservation to ice and dust control on roads, calcium chloride is safe and is around you every day.

Uses of Calcium Chloride

One of the most common uses for tech grade calcium chloride is in ice prevention. It depresses the freezing point of water and is much more effective at lower temperatures than sodium chloride. Solutions can be made with calcium chloride and can prevent freezing at temperatures as low as -62°F. This makes it ideal for filling agricultural implement tires as a liquid ballast and aids in traction in cold climates.

Another use for calcium chloride is dust control. It is very hygroscopic and its hydration is an exothermic reaction. It suppresses the formation of dust by keeping the finer dust particles on the road and provides a cushioning layer. This also keeps the road from breaking down and reduces the need for grading by as much as 50% and the need for fill in materials as much as 80%.

Food grade calcium chloride is used in many ways throughout the food industry. It is used as a firming agent for canned vegetables. It can also help the firming process of tofu. Calcium chloride is also commonly used as an electrolyte in sports drinks and bottled waters. When brewing beer, it is sometimes used to correct mineral deficiencies in the brewing water. Calcium Chloride is also used on apples by spraying the trees later in the growing season to help prevent cork spot and bitter pit.

Which Grade Calcium Chloride is Needed?

Calcium Chloride comes in three different forms commercially. Calcium chloride flakes containing 77-80% calcium chloride, granules containing 94-97% calcium chloride, and in liquid form.

Here at Level 7 Chemical we offer the granules in tech grade and food grade.  Make sure you are using the correct grade to suite your needs.

We also offer calcium chloride in liquid form which is a 32% tech grade.

How is Calcium Chloride Made?

Calcium Chloride occurs naturally in limestone. To produce calcium chloride from limestone it is neutralized with hydrochloric acid. It is also produced as a byproduct of soda ash (called the Solvay process). In the United States it is most often produced from brines.

How Long Can You Keep Your Calcium Chloride?

Calcium chloride should be stored in its original bag and in an air tight container to keep out moisture. This is important as humidity will make your calcium chloride turn into a hard block over time.  This should allow your calcium chloride to last indefinitely.

How Fast Will My Calcium Chloride Ship After I Place an Order?

At Level 7 Chemical, we do our best to ship orders out no later than 2 business days, and are usually on time at meeting that goal. However, with supply chain issues and shortages and transportation hiccups, there could be a delay. We will always contact customers after getting an order to let you know the exact details about your order if any delays are expected. We can refund your order amount if we do not have something in stock and it will be delayed.

How Does Your Calcium Chloride Ship?

We ship individual bags of calcium chloride via ground when your order is under 250 lbs.  Above that your order will be shipped LTL.
