N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP)

High-purity, aprotic, water-miscible solvent widely used in resins, coatings, electronics, cleaning, dispersion, and process applications. Technical grade.

CAS: 872-50-4 UN/NA: NA 1993 Solvent • Aprotic • Water-miscible

Overview

N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP) is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a mild amine-like odor. It is miscible with water and many organics, enabling effective solvency and co-solvency in challenging formulations. Industries rely on NMP for its high polarity, strong solvency, and excellent wetting and dispersion performance.

Common Applications

  • Electronics / Microelectronics: process solvent, wafer cleaning, flux and dye removal.
  • Coatings & Resins: epoxy stripping, polyurethane and specialty resin processing, pigment dispersion.
  • Cleaning & Degreasing: effective solvency for soils, inks, and residues; co-solvent with water/alcohols.
  • Floor Polish: co-solvent to improve gloss and film properties.
  • Textiles & Plastics: spinning/finishing aids and polymer processing.
  • Agrochemicals & Industrial: carrier and process solvent in diverse formulations.

Formulation & Performance

NMP’s polarity and high solvency power make it an exceptional co-solvent alongside water, alcohols, and other organics. It promotes film formation, improves pigment dispersion, enhances gloss in polishes, and supports resin swelling and removal for stripping applications.

Compatibility & Use

Compatible with many resins, polymers, and additives. Validate in your process; observe temperature, residence time, and material compatibility best practices. For sensitive electronics work, ensure post-cleaning rinses and drying are optimized to spec.
